Fall by the Tracks 5K Fun Run scheduled for Oct. 4

From press release:

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC – On Saturday, Oct. 4, The Old Depot Association hosts its 21st annual “Fall by the Tracks 5K Fun Run,” plus an all-day community festival for the family. The event features arts and craft exhibits and demonstrations by the crafters showcased at the Old Depot Gallery, and kids’ games, music, entertainment, and refreshments.

“This is a family fun day, with activities for children and adults,” said Jim Griffin, vice president of the Association and event organizer.

The 5K run will start at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Old Depot Gallery on 207 Sutton Avenue at Cherry Street in the heart of Historic Black Mountain.

Awards will be given to winners of the Children’s, Teens’, and Adult Divisions. Free T-shirts will be given to all registered participants.

The 5K is a flat course taking runners down Vance Avenue and across parts of the Black Mountain greenway. Oaks Trail takes runners to Recreation Park, where they will circle the sports fields. Once completed at Recreation Park, runners will return via Oaks Trail to Vance Avenue on to the Old Depot.

The festival runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and includes demonstrations by several Gallery crafters. Virginia Fadden, a talented and creative knitter, will demonstrate her art from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Children’s activities include face painting, pumpkin painting, cake walk, beanbag toss, storytelling, and more.

Proceeds from “Fall by the Tracks” support the nonprofit Old Depot Gallery, located in the century-old building that originally housed Black Mountain’s railroad station (local service ceased in 1975), and an adjacent historic railway car. The organization also offers grants to Swannanoa Valley area schools in support of Western North Carolina’s heritage in the arts.

The volunteer-run Gallery is a showcase for Western North Carolina artists and crafters, and attracts a growing number of visitors and tourists each year who enjoy the diverse art objects, such as hand-crafted wooden toys, stained glass ornaments, paintings, pottery, knitted and crocheted children’s clothing and accessories, hand-dyed scarves and fabrics, hand-fabricated greeting cards, and many more.

Sponsors of the Fun Run include: My Father’s Pizza, Precision Graphics, Black Mountain Mini-Storage, Richard Wiedeman, DDS, The Curiosity Shoppe, the Griffin family, Site Rhythms, and Professional Landscape Solutions.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains just 15 miles east of Asheville, Black Mountain has long been a culturally rich and varied arts and crafts community.
