Junior Walk, opponent of mountaintop removal mining, speaks at UNCA March 27

Junior Walk, a West Virginia native who travels the country speaking out against mountaintop-removal mining on behalf of the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. Walk was a 2011 recipient of the Earth Island Institute’s Brower Youth Award for Environmental Leadership.

Walk’s talk completes two days of informational activities about the impact of coal mining on West Virginia’s environment – the award-winning documentary “On Coal River,” will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the Highsmith Union Grotto. The film’s Asheville-based filmmakers, Francine Cavanaugh and Adams Wood, will discuss the film after the screening.

Both events are free and open to the public, presented by UNC Asheville Cultural Events & Special Academic Programs, with more information at cesap.unca.edu/upcoming-events or 251-6991.
