Local weight-loss camp announces summer sessions

From the press release:

CANTON, NC, (April 3, 2012) — Wellspring (www.wellspringweightloss.com), the nation’s leading provider of weight-loss programs, announced today the dates for the summer sessions at Wellspring Adventure Camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Starting May 27, June 17, July 8 and July 29, Wellspring Adventure Camp will start its sessions which range from three, six, nine and 12 weeks for boys and girls ages 11 to 18. Participants in Wellspring’s nationwide summer camps have historically averaged a weight loss of four pounds per week, making the camps some of the most effective treatment options developed for overweight children, teens and young adults.

“We are pleased to bring back this summer camp option to locals in the surrounding areas of Canton and Ashville as the program has produced sustaining results for campers with an average of four to five pounds of weight loss at the adventure camps,” said Lisa Barros, Camp Director of Wellspring Adventure Camp. “Wellspring isn’t about crash weight loss, it’s about lasting change and success. Wellspring campers leave knowing what they need to do to stay fit and healthy for life, not just for the summer.”

The Wellspring approach is based on scientific research that has found specific ways to help overweight and obese children and young adults return to a healthy weight permanently. At the core of the Wellspring program is behavioral change, which is accomplished through teaching self-regulation and applying cognitive-behavioral therapy to transform the way individuals think about diet and activity for maximum long-term success. In addition to weight loss, changes in the campers include improved self-confidence, mood, and school grades.

“We teach campers how to have fun while getting fit and losing weight by offering a wide variety of activities,” said Barros. “Every camper walks away understanding what physical activity they excel in and what is needed to sustain their activity levels back home. Participants also learn about nutrition and what a day of healthy eating can look like from shopping, to preparing and cooking meals, while understanding the balance of calories and fat grams.”

Wellspring Adventure Camp, the first and original Wellspring Camp, is based at Camp Hope in a secluded valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Canton, NC. The East Fork of the Pigeon River runs right through camp, providing swimming and water sports opportunities. Campers live together in traditional cabins with bunk beds and a bathroom in each cabin (two counselors also live in each cabin), and leave base camp on week-long adventures, camping and exploring the amazing mountains, rivers, and valleys of North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Wellspring Adventure Camp is one of the most intimate camps in the nation, with a strong alumni mentor team and a close community of campers who support each other on their weight loss journey.

“The support and interest we’ve received from families looking for a healthy and active summer option in North Carolina have been exciting, so we have returned to the area to introduce new campers and welcome back returning ones to another exciting year of learning and sharpening life-long weight loss skills,” said Jessie Dean, regional director for the Southern States, Wellspring. “Wellspring is all about staying active while having fun. Whether it be swimming, hiking, canoeing or any number of activities hosted on campus, our goal is to provide a supportive environment so that campers can achieve their goal while gaining confidence no matter what their current level of fitness is.”
