Pawndemonium XXIV – local chess tournament for kids
We in the Kiwanis Club of Asheville are convinced that learning to play chess can have a major positive influence on academic performance. U.S. educators have begun to realize that playing chess improves cognitive abilities, rational thinking and reasoning in addition to improving test scores. Chess brings out latent abilities not reached by traditional educational means.
As part of our program to foster chess in Buncombe County schools, the Kiwanis Club of Asheville is proud to co-sponsor, with the City of Asheville, the upcoming Pawndemonium XXIV chess tournament for regional school kids. The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Montford Center (two blocks west of Montford Rd just north of I 240). The competition will include four divisions: K-12, K-8, K-5, and K-3 (kindergarten through third grade). For the three younger divisions, there is an additional USCF rating limit: K-8 under 1000; K-5 under 900; and K-3 under 800. This rating limit applies only to those participants who have a USCF rating based on past tournament play.
There will be 50 trophies and 100 T-shirts (to the first 100 entrants). Registration/check-in will take place on site from 08:30 to 09:00 am. Because preparation for play is a complicated process, no registration will be allowed after 09:00 am. Pre-registration by mail is encouraged for those who wish to ensure a T-shirt. The pre-registration fee is $15; the on-site fee is $20. USCF membership is required ($17 to $26). USCF fee of $17 will be paid by Kiwanis Club of Asheville for K – 5 Buncombe County students.
