YMCA launches annual healthier communities campaign

Full announcement from the YMCA:

Western North Carolina – Every day, the YMCA of Western North Carolina serves as a gathering place for the community. Kids pour in the Y’s 19 afterschool sites to learn, play and grow in a safe environment. Seniors connect with one another through exercise classes and group activities. Families learn how to eat healthy and grow together. Cancer survivors gain hope and strength through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. Twenty-first Century mentors encourage at risk middle schoolers to reach their full potential. To ensure western North Carolina residents continue to receive life enhancing services, the Y is launching its annual Healthier Communities Campaign.

Financial gifts to the Y will help advance programming and services that support youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. More importantly, gifts to the Y stay in the community, having a direct impact on residents right here in western North Carolina.

“Through our Healthier Communities Campaign, we want to educate people that we are more than a place to go to exercise or swim, but an organization that does vital work thanks to the support of the community,” said Paul Vest, President and CEO, YMCA of Western North Carolina. “The Y contributes to improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods through a variety of ways that benefit all of us who live and work in western North Carolina.”

Last year, financial support made it possible for more than 850 kids to have a safe place to learn and build confidence after school; over 200 at risk youth to receive tutoring and build character; more than 4,000 families to reconnect and grow together; and 148 survivors to reclaim their health after cancer.

This year, the YMCA of Western North Carolina hopes to raise $530,000. Funds raised will support YMCA Afterschool, Summer Day Camp, 21st Century Program, YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, Fit After 50, Youth Sports and many more vital programs.

The YMCA’s Healthier Communities Campaign kick-off event will take place on Monday, February 18th at your local Y. The event will feature a variety of activities, games, storytelling, and healthy snacks throughout the day.
