The Media Arts Project and HATCH Asheville are teaming up for a fundraising event with a theme that explores collaboration.
The two organizations will host “CodeName: OpenSource” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, at Pack Place. Tickets cost $20 and include drinks and hors d’oeuvres and will be sold at the door, through the HATCH Asheville Web site and at the Pack Place ticket office.
The event will showcase an interactive audio project, music and video clips of local film projects. The work of animators Chas Llewellyn and David Miller, interactive digital-media artists Gene Felice and Lei Han, and filmmakers Paul Schattel, Adams Wood, Michael Folliett and Chris Bower will be on display, and members of the UNCA Multimedia Arts and Sciences department will participate.
Teresa Spangler, former vice president of Red Hat/Linux, will give a keynote presentation at 8 p.m. Spangler’s talk, titled “The Future of OpenSource,” will focus on how the concept of the open-source development of software has grown to include the development of everything from songwriting to pharmacology.
Gillian Coats, operations director for MAP, said the two organizations will split proceeds from the event in half. She added that whatever amount MAP raises will be matched by the AdvantageWest economic-development group, up to $6,000. The Media Arts Project will use the money it raises to fund 2009 grants awarded from the Daniel DeLaVergne Media Arts Advantage Fund.
“We’ll be asking people to donate to that fund,” Coats said.
HATCH Asheville is a nonprofit organization focusing on networking and mentoring, and it will host its first annual festival here from April 15 to 19. The event will bring together mentors and newcomers together in seven different areas: architecture, film, fashion, photography, journalism, music and design and technology.
