Resuming nonpartisan elections in Asheville will certainly expand this campaign cycle’s field of City Council candidates, but maintaining the current electoral process means that the city will have a new filing period for Council hopefuls. Filing is open to any Democrat, Republican or unaffiliated person.
According to a city of Asheville report, the State Board of Elections met Friday and determined the new filing period would take place from noon on Monday, Aug. 13, through noon on Monday, Aug. 20. And it’s not just unaffiliated candidates who have to get on board. According to the report, all candidates “must file during this new filing period, regardless of whether they had previously filed.”
The Buncombe County Board of Elections noted that candidates who had filed previously do not have to pay another filing fee but must complete a new filing packet.
