Blog Log: The week in local blogging

Emboldened by beer and camaraderie, last Saturday night Asheville bloggers partied at the annual Extravablogiversapaloozathon, held at a not-so-secret West Asheville location. The celebration reached a fever pitch with the announcement of the BlogAsheville Awards.

Voting for the awards took place online. When the votes were tallied, Hangover Journals was the evening’s shining recipient, taking awards for “best writing,” “blogger I’d most like to have a beer with,” “blog most likely to make you laugh out loud” and “best overall blog.” Hangover author Felicity Green, who’s pictured here, walked away with the Blogger Staff of Power, which she will bear until next year’s awards.

For a list of the winners — in categories ranging from “blogger we’d most like to see naked” to “biggest slacker” — click here.

In a surprise announcement made during the awards ceremony, Mountain Xpress Managing Editor Jon Elliston announced the results of the newspaper’s first-ever blog category in our annual Best of WNC issue (out on stands and the Internet on Oct. 17). Xpress readers chose these local blogs as their top three:

1) Ashvegas
2) Scrutiny Hooligans
3) Ashevillereviews

Congrats, folks!

Each week, Blog Log presents highlights from the local blogospere. Share yours below.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.

The blog is designed to capture moments that make life in Asheville the unique and wonderful experience we’ve come to cherish. Thank you for providing this forum for local bloggers. I hope I will be welcomed into the Asheville blogging community.
