After interviewing four potential candidates on Tuesday, Asheville City Council voted 4-2 to appoint Kelly Miller as their seventh member. Miller, the executive VP of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and the executive director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, got nods from Council members Bill Russell, Carl Mumpower, Robin Cape and Mayor Terry Bellamy.
Miller was one of the finalists, along with Charlie Hume, Esther Manheimer and Chuck Archerd, picked from 47 applicants, to be interviewed by Council. A fifth pick, Sylvia Farrington, withdrew her name from consideration Tuesday morning.
Miller, who will be officially sworn in on Friday, Dec. 12, at 5 p.m., told Council during his interview that “these are the most challenging times Council, city staff and the citizens of Asheville have faced in decades.”
The final vote came after initial attempts at a majority vote in which three Council members, Jan Davis, Brownie Newman and Cape, voted in support of Manheimer. In that vote, Bellamy and Russell named Miller, and Mumpower voted for Hume. After two more attempts at reaching a majority vote, Miller got the four needed to win the seat.
