AC-T: May 23 hearing set for Asheville water case

A judge will hear oral arguments May 23 in a case that will determine control of the city water system and could redraw the line between local and state government power in North Carolina, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported Tuesday.

The outcome of the lawsuit city government brought last year to block the transfer of the Asheville system to the Metropolitan Sewerage District will be of the most interest to officials and water customers in Buncombe County and nearby areas. But Mayor Esther Manheimer said Monday the case will have statewide impact.

“When I talk with mayors and council members and even county commissioners across the state, they’re watching this case very carefully because the ruling has much broader implications than just Asheville’s water system,” Manheimer said.
