Asheville resident and three-time Peace Corps veteran Carla Seidl has turned her writing and ethnography talents to the local food movement, launching a new website called Earth Flavors (earthflavors.net).
With a couple of new “flavors” a month, Seidl’s Earth Flavors blog gives readers the inside scoop on produce and foodstuffs at area farmer’s markets, CSAs and local-leaning groceries.
“I hope the project will serve as inspiration for tasty, earth-friendly cooking, encourage sustainable ways of living, and forge community by promoting local growers and producers,” says Seidl.
“At Earth Flavors,” she explains, “it’s not just about the individual flavors.” Each profile reveals the story behind the ingredient. Where does it come from? Who grows it, and how? More than just a review site, the blog aims to be a window on food culture in Western North Carolina.
Six articles have already been posted on the site, including features on wildflower honey from Wild Mountain Bees in Weaverville, goat milk from Round Mountain Creamery in Black Mountain, jam from Imladris Farm in Fairview, and pasture raised pork from Dry Ridge Farm in Mars Hill.
In addition to farm and farmer profiles, Earth Flavors also features its own directory and a local food resources page.
Seidl loves to improvise in the kitchen with what is fresh and available. Once a private cook and a willing worker on organic farms (WWOOFer), she is a published author as well as a radio producer and singer-songwriter. Seidl holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and is an alumna of Harvard College and the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Her audio work has previously been heard on The Splendid Table and Weekend America.
