We celebrate independent artists every day, but on the July 4 holiday weekend, it seems especially pertinent to play songs by local musicians, made without major (or even minor, in many cases) support.
On this week’s playlist:
• “Little by Little” by singer-songwriter Aaron Burdett, from his new album, Fruits of My Labor. He performs at The Heart of Brevard 4th of July celebration, today at 4:15 p.m., and at Isis Restaurant and Music Hall with Tellico on Thursday, July 17, 8 p.m.
• “Did the Dew Taste Sweet” by singer-songwriter Don Chambers, from his album, A Sudden Loss of Elevation.
• “The Nighttime Coming” by indie-rockers Antique Firearms, from their second album, Vicious Behavior. That band is getting ready to leave Asheville for L.A. Catch them before they head out — they’ll be at DIG Fest on Friday, Aug. 22.
• “Girl’s Best Friend (Space Girl)” by singer-songwriter Aaron LaFalce from his most recent album, Kairology. He performs as part of the Homegrown in Pritchard series on Thursday, July 10, at 6 p.m.
• “I Don’t Know Why” by ’60s folk-pop duo The Sun Cans, from their forthcoming EP. The track debuted on NoiseTrade.
• “Dead Reckoning” by indie-rock outfit Floating Action, from a Shaking Through session. Floating Action will play The Grey Eagle on Saturday, Aug. 23, Big Love Festival on Sunday, Aug. 2, and will release new album, Body Questions, on August 26.
