Here’s the press release from Warren Wilson College:
K. Johnson Bowles, associate vice president for corporate and foundation relations at Longwood University, has been named vice president of advancement at Warren Wilson College.
Bowles’ appointment by President Steven L. Solnick and the Warren Wilson College Board of Trustees is effective Sept. 22. Bowles will succeed Janet vL. Doyle, who has served as interim vice president of advancement since July 1. Doyle will resume her previous position as director of development upon Bowles’ arrival at Warren Wilson.
As vice president of advancement, Bowles will be Warren Wilson’s senior fundraising officer and a strategic partner with the president as she assumes responsibility for designing, planning and initiating development programs. She will lead an advancement team that contributes to the college’s mission and strategic plan through the building of relationships and the engagement of Warren Wilson College alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends.
“We’re elated that Johnson Bowles is coming to Warren Wilson College to lead our advancement efforts,” Solnick said. “She has the experience and expertise to successfully develop and direct all aspects of a comprehensive advancement program.”
At Longwood, Bowles secured several of the largest gifts in the university’s history, including numerous seven- and six-figure gifts. During the past year, while holding a dual appointment as assistant professor of art at Longwood, Bowles has been charged with establishing an office to oversee and coordinate university-wide corporate and foundation activities.
“Warren Wilson College has long known what others in higher education are just beginning to understand: there is enormous power and validity in an education that combines academic rigor; the practical application of knowledge through work; and the importance of using one’s skills for the benefit of the community,” Bowles said. “I look forward to being a part of this forward-thinking, creative and innovative institution.”
Before her most recent position, Bowles was an American Council on Education Fellow as well as an associate vice president in the Office of the President at Longwood. A native North Carolinian and an alumna of Boston University and Ohio University, she has 20 years of higher education experience as a faculty member and as an administrator specializing in fundraising, strategic planning, community engagement and management.
Founded in 1894 as the Asheville Farm School, Warren Wilson College is the country’s only liberal arts college with a national student body and integrated work and service programs.
