AC-T: Incentives battle dims hope for landing big employer

Excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:

State legislators’ decision not to allow North Carolina to offer more economic development incentives has jeopardized an attempt to lure at least one major employer to Buncombe County, a local recruiter says.

The county Board of Commissioners during closed sessions in August approved offering local incentives to a new company that would employ more than 300 people and to another project that would bring 150 jobs and make a $20 million investment, according to minutes of the meetings.

But state officials say they will have used up an allotment for some incentives by late October, a big worry for Ben Teague, executive director of the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville Buncombe County.

“We’re chasing probably the largest capital investment in the history of Buncombe County, and this is throwing a wrench in it,” Teague said. “If we don’t get those dollars, we’re done.”

The names of the company or companies looking at Buncombe are not publicly known. The county is not required to release full details on incentives until a deal is done.
