ECO Hosts Annual Environmental Film Fest November 7
(HENDERSONVILLE, NC, October 8, 2014) – The 2014 ECO Environmental Film Fest will include the outstanding film “Chasing Ice” as well as a preview of a new documentary “The Call of the Ancient Mariner.” The Film Fest will be Friday, November 7, at Hendersonville Little Theater, 229 S. Washington St., at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 for this ECO fundraiser. Tickets are available at the ECO website, www.eco-wnc.org, or at the ECO office, 611 N. Church St. in Hendersonville during business hours.
The feature film – “Chasing Ice” – follows National Geographic photographer James Balog across the Arctic as he deploys time-lapse cameras designed for one purpose: to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. Once a skeptic about climate change, Balog, founder of Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), presents the footage in as non-partisan manner as possible. According to one viewer, “Chasing Ice” avoids tarnishing its message with politics.
“Excellent film. Solid science and art. Thorough, and beautifully made,” according to one reviewer. “Very inspiring work by photographer Jim Balog–the human subject of the film. It’s a wonderful thing when a person of strong science background becomes an artist and vice versa. It comes together magnificently with beauty and the gravity of what it really is about. A must see for EVERYONE.”
Since premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012, where it was awarded for Excellence in Cinematography, “Chasing Ice” has been shown at film festivals around the world.
ECO Film Fest attendees will also see a “teaser” preview of “The Call of the Ancient Mariner” –a film-in-the-making about sea turtles — by local documentary film maker David Weintraub.
“This film project started as a personal quest to learn about sea turtles along the coast of South Carolina,” according to Weintraub, “and it became a study of ecology, environmentalism, culture, and human nature.”
Intermission will feature refreshments — beverages from Hendersonville Food Co-op and light snacks — and information about ECO and its upcoming projects and programs.
“Visit with like-minded friends, enjoy refreshments and lively discussion, and learn about the science of climate change and the world of sea turtles,” said Jan Partin, ECO board president. “The Film Fest, now in its sixth year, is a popular fundraiser for ECO.”
