Built around one of the most recognizable four-note opening bars of all time, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is “a classical piece that everyone should hear live at least once,” according to Asheville Symphony Orchestra marketing manager Michael Morel. ASO is extending its concert season into January for the first time ever to give Ashevilleans just such an opportunity. This fourth Masterworks concert of the winter begins with a performance of Verdi’s “Sicilian Vespers.” The evening also stars Korean violin virtuoso Kyung Ah Oh of the Cleveland Institute of Music in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto before treating attendees to the main performance. ASO takes over the stage of the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m. $22-62. uscellularcenterasheville.com. Photo of Oh courtesy of ASO
