Make Music Day began in France as Fête de la Musique more than 30 years ago. The annual music event finally comes to Asheville with an inaugural festival set for Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21. Free events are held at Moog Music, the Asheville Percussion Festival and The Mothlight, and can be tuned in on AshevilleFM.

**UPDATE** The Rock Academy performs a free show at The Atlamont Theatre on Sunday, at 3 p.m., as part of Make Music Day.

Press release from event organizers:

Music will fill the air as Make Music Day, the world’s largest annual music event, launches it’s first festival in Asheville with a wild and wonderful mix of music-making.

On June 20 & 21, 2015, a consortium of community volunteers will launch Make Music Asheville, an all-day, open-access, free and non-profit music festival designed to celebrate local talent and inspire others to play music in a variety of neighborhoods across the greater Asheville region.

Make Music Day began in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, and has since spread to over 700 cities in 120 countries. Every city has a unique musical ecology and, in turn, offers a different perspective on this worldwide celebration. Make Music Asheville’s primary goals are to provide an equal platform for musicians of all skill levels, interests and walks of life and to inspire the next generation of musicians.

A collection of performances in intimate spaces including a community center, retail store, and school will highlight the social function of music – bridging the gaps between the formal and informal.

This event is an all-ages, all-inclusive celebration of music; whether you’re in a string quartet, a solo artist, a child, a senior, a saxophonist or a thereminist – everyone is welcome and encouraged to join the celebration!

Interested in performing during Make Music Asheville 2015? The sign-up period is still open until June 15, 2015 – visit: www.makemusicday.org/asheville to register.
