Cover your crops and bring your potted plants inside: It’s about to get chilly in Western North Carolina.
From late Saturday night to Sunday morning, several WNC counties will be under a freeze watch. Counties affected by the cold front are: Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Haywood, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell and Yancy — including the cities of Banner Elk, Newland, Elk Park, Crossnore, Sugar Mountain, Mars Hill, Marshall, Hot Springs, Burnsville, Spruce Pine, Waynesville, Canton, Lake Junaluska, Edgemont, Jonas Ridge, Old Fort and Asheville.
“Passage of a weak cold front on Friday will make way for Canadian high pressure this weekend,” reads the report from the National Weather Service. “This Canadian high will usher in much cooler and drier air, with overnight lows expected to be 10 to 15 degrees below normal in some places on Saturday night.”
Temperatures the next few nights will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s, and skies are expected to stay clear into next week. The high over the weekend is about 57 degrees.
