In order to create a Big Ideas timeline that better represents the diverse story of Asheville, Xpress invites the community to submit the big ideas that they feel have shaped the city and area we live in today. In a recent open letter, a group of local citizens rightly took Xpress to task for the recent Big Ideas package, which omitted the many contributions of many women and people of color.
As part of the effort to better serve the community, Xpress asks readers to submit ideas in the comments below or send them to news@mountainx.com or Managing Editor Margaret Williams. We’ll incorporate them into an upcoming timeline — one we hope will grow into a valuable resource.
Also, we’re looking into online tools that allow us to create an interactive and interesting timeline that can evolve and grow as more insights come from the public. If you know of one particularly suited to this task, please let us know by contacting reporters Jake Frankel or David Forbes.
Update Jan. 23: We just wanted to let those interested to know that we’re moving forward with developing the timeline and have decided to use Timeline JS as our online tool. Please continue to let us know what ideas you think we should include by posting them in the comments field below or by emailing us. We’ve also been compiling the ideas people have shared here and here.
