Local artist’s work chosen for national exhibit

Original beaded artworks by Sue Osterberg, a Hendersonville resident, will be on display at the Folk Art Center in Asheville from January 23 to May 8, 2016 as part of Through the Needle’s Eye, the 20th national exhibit organized by The Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA).

Mrs. Osterberg’s intricately beaded creations were chosen from entries submitted from all over the United States and were evaluated by a panel of Master Jurors. Her submissions include two beaded pieces. The “Blue Ridges” necklace is beaded in the herringbone stitch, using Swarovski crystals in various sizes & finishes utilizing blue and blue-green beads.

The second piece, “Serendipitous Sunflowers”, is a wall hanging featuring three beaded sunflowers, each with a different center. This piece is done in square stitch using the summer season as the color palette. There are complementary colors in the orange of the sunflowers and the cobalt blue of the sky. The piece hangs from hardware designed and crafted to complement this work.

Mrs. Osterberg is passionate about all sorts of challenging needle work. She says her beads have a way of speaking to her while she is creating. She feels that living in the mountains of North Carolina is very inspiring as there are so many wonderful artists and crafters in the area.
Mrs. Osterberg has been working toward her designation as EGA Master Craftsman in Beading. This six-step program requires her to design and bead original works and then submit them for detailed critiques. She is currently working on the final step.

Mrs. Osterberg has been a member of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America for 24 years in Wisconsin, New York and North Carolina. She is actively involved with EGA at the local, regional, and national levels, holding numerous offices. She was Dean of Faculty for the Carolinas Region seminars for six years and is currently assistant chairman for the EGA national seminar that will be held in Asheville in August of 2017.
