Jazz with a holiday twist at Tryon Fine Arts Center, Dec. 10

Press release from Tryon Fine Arts Center:

World-renowned Jazz artists Nnenna Freelon and John Brown Trio welcome the holiday season at Tryon Fine Arts Center on Saturday, December 10 at 8pm.

Six-time Grammy nominee Freelon will present her signature renditions of beloved Jazz standards as well as holiday classics, turning the expected into something quite different and wonderful.

For instance, she mines the Ellington songbook for “I Like The Sunrise,” a tune not typically associated with the holiday season, but which readily applies to the feelings of children on Christmas morning. The late Frank Foster penned the arrangement to a fun romp and twist through “Swingle Jingle Bells.”

Freelon collaborates on this project with longtime friend and musical colleague, bassist-extraordinaire John Brown and his Trio. They put the swing in the season, and Brown—both Duke University educator and performer—surrounds Freelon with the Yuletide spirit.

This is the first holiday-themed tour for Freelon and John Brown Trio. Freelon says of her first holiday tour, “Music was always a big part of my family Christmas celebrations. These are the songs that we return to again and again every holiday season. They are filled with warm memories. These songs bring me so much joy and warm memories. Christmas for me celebrates the gifts of peace and hope.”

You’ll find this, and much more, in the songs that Nnenna Freelon and the John Brown Trio bring to Tryon Fine Arts Center on Saturday, December 10. Tickets are $35 for adults, and $17 for students, available through the Box Office at tryonarts.org or by calling 828-859-8322.

Season tickets are also available. The 2016-2017 Main Stage Season continues in 2017 with Sierra Hull on January 14th; George Winston on March 25th; and J. Mark McVey on April 22nd.

Nnenna Freelon and John Brown Trio are presented by Tryon Daily Bulletin, Tryon Estates, and the North Carolina Arts Council. The 2016-2017 Main Stage Season is presented by Parsec Financial.
