Press release from David Joe Miller:
In early 2015, Storyteller David Joe Miller began a series of monthly Spoken Word Open Mic shows at New Mountain SOL Bar. While most Open Mic’s are geared toward music, Millers open mic was exclusively produced for the spoken word, namely poets and storytellers.
Over the course of a year David Joe moved the show to The Buffalo Nickel on Haywood Road, a restaurant venue which closed this past year leaving Spoken Word Open Mic without a home in Asheville. In the meantime, Miller began producing the same show in Millers’ home town of Jonesborough, TN. The Storytelling Capital of the World and home of the International Storytelling Center and Festival. The show continues to thrive in Jonesborough every month but Miller has been working toward offering it again in Asheville.
On Monday July 30th Spoken Word Open Mic returns and will be presented at Habitat Tavern and Commons, 174 Broadway St. downtown Asheville. This free event invites storytellers and poets to show up, sign up and share with our supportive and enthusiastic audience. There is never a theme, never any competition and no censor. The only rule is a ten minute time limit on stage. Guest hosts for July will be National Story Slam Champion, Vara Cooper and Executive Producer and storyteller, David Joe Miller. Every month will feature two guests hosts from the spoken word community.
Even if you don’t recite your poetry or tell your story, listening is extremely rewarding. Hearing others “personal” stories and poetry can not only entertain but can also encourage your creative side to write, tell and recite your own words.
Spoken Word Open Mic will be offered on the last Monday of each month at Habitat. Sign up begins at 7pm for the 7:30pm show. Parking in free and plentiful and the words will flow better with Habitat Tavern and Commons on brews.
