“But so much the more malign and wild does the ground become with bad seed and untilled, as it has the more of good earthly vigor.
Divine Comedy, Canto XXX, lines 118–120

Edwin Salas Performance Studio and Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre present two evenings of unique puppet performance art based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, set in the modern purgatory of the US/Mexican border. This production of mature content examines the darkly comic plight of a man who is trying to cross the border and who is facing the demons, in the form of many different animals, of his sins and fears.

A man dressed in black, who is cooking beans, comments to the audience:
“Mi nombre es Virgilio, soy un coyote. No el animal, pendejos, el que ayuda a pasar a los ilegales desde el Infierno que es México hasta llegar al que llamamos cielo, Estados Unidos, el paraíso. ¿Quieren pasar? Pero antes tendrán que pagar sus pecados en el purgatorio de la frontera. Eso si es que sobreviven.”

A voice exclaims that they do not understand and he repeats the same, in English:
“My name is Virgil. I’m a coyote, not the animal -pendejos-, I’m a man to help illegals cross the border from Hell, which is Mexico, to the Heaven. We believe the United States is Heaven, but first one need to pass THE PURGATORY and pay the SEVEN DEADLY SINS IN THE BORDER. Well, only if you survive to cross the border.

“NUESTRA VENGANZA SERA NUESTRO DESTINO OSCURO”
“Our Vengeance will be our dark destiny” El Brujo.

Edwin Salas is an internationally acclaimed puppeteer and performer from Mexico, he has been part of several recent ACDT productions, including “Alice in Wonderland” and “Dance Salad.” And his work is fantastically challenging and intriguing on many levels.

The performance its dedicated to all the illegals who lost their lives to cross the border; but especially for Claudia Patricia Gómez González, who was killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent on Wednesday, May 23rd 2018. She was only 19 years old.
