Press release from the city of Hendersonville:
(Hendersonville, NC, August 23, 2018) – The City of Hendersonville was notified by Lucy Cohn-Still, the Urban Forestry Specialist for the North Carolina Forest Service, that the City has been awarded the Tree City of the Year Recognition by the North Carolina Forest Service and the North Carolina Urban Forest Council.
To be awarded Tree City of the Year, the City of Hendersonville was selected by the North Carolina Forest Service from all the Tree City USAs in NC which received a Growth Award for 2017 efforts, a field of 10. Entries were judged for impact, quality, innovation and the degree to which the work serves as a worthy example for others to follow. Hendersonville has several efforts which support their urban forestry program, including the creation of partnerships with the NC Department of Transportation’s mowing program, as well as the Bee City USA pollinator species program.
Public Works Director Tom Wooten said “All of the hard work the Tree Board, with the support of City Council, City staff, and volunteers have put in this past year has been recognized by the NC Forest Service and NC Urban Forest Council by being awarded the Tree City of the Year for North Carolina. What a great recognition and award for us all.” City Manager John Connet also commended the Tree Board, volunteers and staff who made this recognition possible. “It’s another thing that makes our City the wonderful place it is. We could not do this without the excellent help from our loyal, hard-working volunteers.”
The City of Hendersonville will be recognized at the NC Urban Forest Council’s 11th Annual Great NC Tree Conference Awards Luncheon on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the Benton Convention Center at Twin City Quarter in Winston-Salem.
Guests attending the luncheon only will need to register at the cost of $20.
The NC Forest Service congratulated Hendersonville for all its efforts to promote urban forestry.
