Daniel Wallace will keynote 2019 Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction

Press release from Literacy Council of Buncombe County:

New York Times bestselling author Daniel Wallace will keynote the Literacy Council of Buncombe County’s 12th Annual Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction on October 25, 2019.

Daniel Wallace is the author of six novels: Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions, Ray in Reverse, The Watermelon King, Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician, The Kings and Queens of Roam, and most recently Extraordinary Adventures. Big Fish was adapted and released as a major feature film directed by Tim Burton and starring Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney. It became a Broadway musical in 2013. Wallace also wrote and illustrated The Cat’s Pajamas, a children’s book published in 2014. His novels have been translated into over three dozen languages.

Daniel Wallace is the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his alma mater, where he directs the Creative Writing Program. A native of Alabama, Wallace was awarded the 2019 Harper Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the Year.

The Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction featuring Daniel Wallace will begin with a cocktail hour and silent auction to include distinctive art and crafts, autographed and rare books, and priceless opportunities to enjoy excursions in Asheville and beyond. Following the cocktail hour, event guests will enjoy a three-course dinner and presentation by a current Literacy Council student. Daniel Wallace will then give the keynote presentation and autograph guests’ books. Book sales will be managed by Malaprop’s Bookstore & Café.

Event guests may upgrade tickets in order to attend a VIP reception with Daniel Wallace just prior to the event. This reception will include the opportunity to spend one-on-one time taking pictures and talking with the author, as well as enjoy hors d’oeuvres.

Proceeds from the Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction benefit the Literacy Council’s programs, which provide comprehensive literacy and English language skills to 350 students and 2,000 book recipients in Buncombe County annually. The Literacy Council gives opportunities to people who don’t believe they have a second chance to learn. Literacy and English language skills are tools that help people rise out of poverty, get better-paying jobs to support their families, and read to their children. Improved literacy skills benefit not only the struggling reader, but everyone in our community regardless of age, race, gender, or background.
