STORY:
A war hero who never wanted to govern. An elected leader who spits on his citizenry. A starving populace rioting to reclaim control of a government run by and for the wealthy. A hint of forbidden romance. A betrayal that might end it all in flames. Shakespeare’s Coriolanus is more relevant today than ever.Coriolanus 2020, produced by fledgling group Nemesis Theatre Company, adds a contemporary twist to Shakespeare’s narrative, turning gender roles on their heads to create a society where “man” and “woman” denote societal roles equally open to all.
Molly Graves, last seen in Anam Cara’s Secret History of Trash Day and as Hermione in Montford Park Players’ The Winter’s Tale, plays the storied war hero Caius Martius Coriolanus, who is begrudgingly elected consul of Rome before being banished for his crass mistreatment of the Roman people. Sonia Rose D’Andrea, a staple of the Montford stage, opposes Graves as Tullus Aufidius, leader of the Volsces, longtime enemies of the Roman people. Armies and heroes clash in this epic tale of political upheaval, forbidden romance, and tragic betrayal.
With Molly Graves, Sonia D’Andrea, Jamie Knox, Madison Brightwell, Julianne Arnall, Lauren Otis, Haven Volpe, Jon Stockdale, Locksley Blanchard, Rachel Cort, Zak Hamrick, Brendan Nickerson, and Hannah Williams. Directed by Melon Wedick.
Nemesis Theatre Company is passionately committed to creating innovative and accessible productions of Shakespeare’s works. This is their first independent production.
