The City of Asheville will have more sweet shade, the rustle of green leaves and flashes of fall color with a tree planting program that begins in March.
Many of these will be what is called “street trees,” those that line our sidewalks. The new trees are replacements for trees that have died, been damaged by vandalism or replacement of trees that are diseased or heavily damaged.
A total of 73 trees will be planted in a variety of locations! Look for the plantings to begin in Biltmore Village. The trees will be planted on 21 different streets. Many of these plantings will be in the Central Business District, in sidewalk tree pits.
City Arborist Mark Foster has selected a number of different varieties, including American Holly, Washington Hawthorn, Ginkgo, Sweetgum, multiple species of Elm, Black Gum, Eastern Hemlocks, Flowering Crabapple, Serviceberry, multiple species of Oak, multiple species of Maple and Dawn Redwood.
BuckTom Services is the contractor for this tree planting contract.
If you encounter some of the new trees, give them some space to get established. Do not let children climb on them, please.
