“What If We Give it Away?” launches amid COVID-19

From the office of Adapt Public Relations:

What If We Give It Away? (WIWGIA) is a grassroots movement encouraging individuals to give some or all of their stimulus check to those in greater need during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The caveat, of course, is only if a person still has a job or is financially stable enough to donate. There is no agenda, just a desire to urge those who can to give and to promote the idea within their circles of influence. While the country is slowly beginning to reopen, the number or people and organizations in need has not lessened.

“The ‘What If We Give It Away?’ campaign was conceived by a group of friends who felt much of the stimulus money went to people who didn’t really need it,” said Paul Rollins, one of the campaign’s founding members. “We decided to give all or part of the money we received to those in greater need and to encourage a few million other folks to do the same.”

WIWGIA suggests donating to individuals in need or to a local charity. The organization does not accept direct donations or grants. The website, www.whatifwegiveitaway.us, also has a list of national organizations that are providing help to people in need during the pandemic and have a minimum 3-star rating from Charity Navigator. As the crisis is most severely affecting those with low incomes, WIWGIA asks people to consider donating to an organization that has helped low income neighbors all along.

The approach is three-pronged:

  1. Give to someone who is hurting, to a business that is struggling, or a local charity that is helping—wherever there is a need.
  2. Create and share a video on social media with the hashtag #WhatIfWeGiveItAway.
  3. Challenge others to join the movement and give what they can. This campaign will

really take off if we all jump in at some level!
