Press release from the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority:
The Haywood County Tourism Development Authority (HCTDA) has launched the “NC Smokies Hiking Safety Tips” campaign in response to the increasing number of new visitors to our mountain towns and trails. The campaign includes a free orange safety whistle with branded breakaway lanyard and a safety tips card. All items are available at the Visitors Center (1110 Soco Road) in Maggie Valley, limited to one whistle per group, while supplies last. The HCTDA will also be distributing posters, creating a safety blog and increase awareness via social media.
Recommended Essential Items:
- Map and Compass
- Extra Layers
- Flashlight
- Sun Protection
- Proper Footwear
- First Aid Kit
- Water
- Food
- Knife
- Backpack
- Safety Whistle
Other key items of the campaign will include Leave No Trace, Give Wildlife Space and Top 5 Hikes. “Our goal is to educate all hikers about safety and being prepared for the changing elements of the NC Smokies. As a reminder a cell phone is not always a reliable option while hiking in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park or along the Blue Ridge Parkway”, said Lynn Collins, Executive Director of HCTDA.
