UPDATED: Student shot in leg during incident at Hendersonville Middle School

Update from the City of Hendersonville, 5:20 p.m: 

The juvenile suspect involved in the November 24, 2020 Hendersonville Middle School incident has been charged with the following:

  • Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill or Inflict Serious Injury (§ 14-32 (b) – Class E)
  • Weapon on Campus or Other Educational Property (§ 14-269.2 (b) – Class F)

He has been released into the custody of juvenile services.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available at this time.

Update from Mission Hospital, 12:30 p.m: 

“Our patient from the event at Hendersonville Middle School is in good, stable condition and resting comfortably. Her family requests privacy at this time. Thank you.”

Update from the City of Hendersonville, 12:10 p.m:

The Hendersonville Police Department and Henderson County Public Schools have provided additional details as the investigation into the incident at Hendersonville Middle School continues.

The twelve-year-old female student who sustained a gunshot wound in the leg is reported to be in stable condition at Mission Hospital. The twelve-year-old male student who discharged the firearm is in the custody of the Hendersonville Police Department.

The incident is still under investigation. No details about charges are available at this time. Anyone with additional information regarding the incident should contact the Hendersonville Police Department at 828-697-3025.

Press release from the Hendersonville Police Department and Henderson County Public Schools: 

At approximately 7:45 a.m. on November 24, 2020, the Hendersonville Police Department responded to an incident involving a firearm on the campus of Hendersonville Middle School. A student discharged a firearm on campus, wounding another student. The juvenile suspect was immediately detained by a school administrator.

Henderson County Public School administrators immediately initiated a Code Red lockdown to secure the school campus, which was quickly downgraded to a Code Yellow once the student suspect was detained and the scene was secured.

The twelve-year-old student who was struck in the leg was transported by ambulance to Mission Hospital. The firearm and the student suspect are in the custody of the Hendersonville Police Department and the investigation is continuing.

The school will begin dismissal of students while remaining under a preventive lockdown. Buses will dismiss at 10 a.m. and car riders will dismiss at 10:15 a.m. School families are being contacted by their administrators with specific procedures.

We want to highlight the swift response provided by school administrators, the HMS School Resource Officer, local law enforcement and first responders who quickly secured the scene.

The school system and law enforcement will share additional details as they become available.
