Asheville animal welfare groups partner to launch new lost and found pet website and microchip tag program

Press release from Asheville Humane Society:

In partnership with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Asheville Humane Society, and the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, an initiative is underway to help reunite pet owners with their missing pets. LostPetsAVL.org, a comprehensive lost and found pet website, was created to facilitate the search and reunification process. This collaborative effort aims to raise awareness about the importance of microchipping pets and provide invaluable resources to protect them from getting lost.

As part of the program, all animals entering Asheville Humane Society and Brother Wolf, as well as cats and dogs who receive spay/neuter services at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, will be microchipped and receive an “I’m microchipped” tag that easily attaches to their collar. If a pet goes missing, the tag directs finders to LostPetsAVL.org. The website features a user-friendly map and a list of businesses and vet clinics offering free microchip scans in Buncombe County, aiding finders in locating the pet’s owner. Furthermore, the website provides valuable tips and guidance on other ways community members can contribute to the successful reunion of a lost pet and their families.

To mark the launch of this program, a free microchipping event will take place on June 30th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) in Asheville. To guarantee an appointment, pet owners are invited to register in advance. Appointment times are flexible, and walk-ups will be accepted as available. Each pet will receive the “I’m microchipped” tag to enhance their chances of being reunited with their families if they ever go missing.

Microchipping has proven effective in increasing the likelihood of lost pets being returned to their owners. However, it is essential to keep contact information up to date to maximize the effectiveness of microchips.

“Microchipping your pet and ensuring accurate contact information is crucial for successful reunions,” said Lisa Johns, Chief of Operations at Asheville Humane Society. “We are so excited about this collaborative program. Together, we can ensure that more pets find their way back home.”

With the summer season, the risk of pets going missing increases. Barbecues, open windows, people coming in and out of the house, and loud fireworks can lead to pets getting lost. To ensure the safety of your pets during this time, the following tips are recommended:

  1. Microchip and ID Tags: Ensure your pet is microchipped and wearing an ID tag with up-to-date contact information.
  2. Provide a Safe Space During Loud Events: Summer often includes noisy events like fireworks displays. Never use fireworks around pets or bring them to fireworks displays. Opt to keep pets at home in a secure and comfortable space where they can retreat during such events.
  3. Use Leashes and Harnesses: When taking your pet for walks or outings, always have them on a leash or harness. Even well-trained pets can be startled and try to bolt. A leash provides an extra layer of security.
  4. Be Mindful of Open Doors and Windows: We tend to keep doors and windows open as the weather gets warmer. However, be cautious when doing so, as pets may attempt to slip out unnoticed. Teach your pet to wait or stay away from open doors and check that your windows are secure to avoid accidental escapes.

Remember, vigilance, proper identification, and a secure environment are key to keeping your pet safe and by your side.
