Press release from Buncombe County Schools:
Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson announces a new administrative appointment for Buncombe County Schools for the 2023-24 school year. Dr. Mindy Conner will join BCS as the new Director of Special Services.
Dr. Conner’s prior experience includes Chief Student Supports Officer for Washington County Schools, Tennessee; Assistant Director of Schools, Director of Special Education in Washington County Schools; Director of Special Education in Unicoi Co. Schools, Tennessee; and, high school special education teacher for Washington Co. Schools.
“The selection process for this important position included a survey of all Exceptional Children’s staff members and an interview committee consisting of EC teachers, principals, a school psychologist, a program placement specialist, and district leadership,” said Associate Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed. “It was crucial that the needs of our students and the voices of our faculty guided the identification of our new Director of Special Services. I am confident that we have found the right person to serve our students, families, and staff.”
Dr. Conner’s educational background includes a B.S. in Special Education, Master of Education and Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership all from East Tennessee State University.
“Dr. Conner has devoted her entire educational career, now spanning over 20 years of public education service, to Special Education,” said Dr. Jackson. “Her deep knowledge of Special Education, her belief in every student’s ability to achieve their potential, and her commitment to building strong relationships are readily apparent. As we continue to grow and improve in meeting the needs of all of our students, having leaders who prioritize being in the classroom and who listen and learn from our teachers is paramount to our continuing to be the best choice for students and their families.”
The BCS Special Services Department encompasses a variety of supports and services including physical therapy, speech/language support, Autism Services, Occupational Therapy, behavior support, psychology, Pre-K services, homebound services, and deaf and hard of hearing services. Dr. Conner’s first day is November 22. She replaces current Special Services Director Amy Dupree, who is retiring.
