African American Caucus hosts April 27 meeting

News release from the Buncombe County Democratic Party:

The African-American Caucus (AAC) of the Buncombe County Democratic Party (BCDP) is planning regular meetings to discuss and address the issues specifically facing African American members of our community.

Led by former BCDP Vice Chair Shea Drummond-Johnson, and Buncombe County District 1 Commissioner candidate Jennifer Horton, this group invites all African American residents in the county to add their thoughts and suggestions.

The first meeting of this newly re-energized Caucus will be held on April 27 from 2-4pm at BCDP Headquarters, 951 Old Fairview Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

“Sometimes, with all that’s going on in the country and the world, people forget to focus on the needs and issues facing our own communities,” said Ms. Drummond-Johnson. “We are going to make sure that Black people have a safe and open forum to share their own experiences and suggestions for a better Buncombe,” she added.

Ms. Horton said: “While out campaigning during the Primary, I heard from African American voters who wanted more support from the local Democratic Party. I also heard from the BCDP that they would welcome guidance on what we feel is most needed. We’re going to find ways to give them that.”

BCDP Chair Kathie Kline is very positive about the potential for the AAC, saying “We are delighted that Shea and Jennifer are reactivating this Caucus to amplify African American voices within our Party. We will all benefit from the stronger ties and better communication this group will foster in our community.”
