Small Bites

Restaurant recyclers: Restaurant owners, do you recycle? If so, the Better Asheville Recycling Coalition, a UNCA student group, wants to know. BARC educates the public about the environmental benefits of recycling and buying recycled goods. The group is currently working on a project to compile and distribute a list of local restaurants that recycle, in an effort to promote environmentally sound businesses. The group hopes that customers will choose to support recycling restaurants, and in turn encourage other eateries to jump on the Earth-friendly bandwagon. The list of participating restaurants will be distributed at UNCA and wherever community information is posted in Asheville. If you would like your business to be included on this list, e-mail BARC at barcasheville@hotmail.com.

Holidays at the Trap: The Lobster Trap is getting ready for the holidays. On Tuesday, Dec. 20, the restaurant will present a special five-course feast paired with complementary wine from Empire Distributing. The event will feature creamy crab soup, roast turkey with a fresh smoked-oyster stuffing, and some surprises. A hazelnut cake layered with chocolate and espresso butter cream will end the evening on a sweet note. Total cost for the dinner is $55 per person, or $100 per couple, and reservations are encouraged. The Lobster Trap is located at 35 Patton Ave. in downtown Asheville. Call the restaurant at 350-0505.

Mama mia!: Have you tried Ciao Bella gelato or sorbet yet? If you’re a gelato lover (or an ice cream lover who’s yet to try gelato), you’re in for a seriously decadent treat. Ciao Bella began as a small neighborhood gelateria more than 20 years ago, and it wasn’t long before restaurant chefs were requesting the company’s frozen delicacies. The gelato contains 20 percent air by volume (compared to 60 percent in most American ice creams), and has a lower butterfat content than most ice cream. Try the Chocolate Hazelnut, if you can find it. The sorbets contain 70-80 percent fruit, with just a little water and sugar for a smooth consistency (the Blood Orange is excellent). You can find pints of the sweet treat in the freezer of your local specialty store; Greenlife, the Fresh Market and the Grove Corner Market all carry Ciao Bella.
