The chefs of the Boathouse Restaurants and authors of The Boathouse: Tales and Recipes from a Southern Kitchen will appear at Malaprop’s on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Douglas Bostick and Jason Davidson will sign books and prepare samples of food featured in the book, which draws on influences from Charleston to Asheville. Believe it or not, it’s time to begin thinking about the holidays, at least if you are interested in taking part in the Grove Park Inn and Spa’s 14th annual National Gingerbread House Competition this November. Executive Pastry Chef Aaron Morgan will conduct a free gingerbread house workshop on Oct. 30 to pass along some trade secrets and answer any questions about how to build one of the tasty candy constructions. It’s time to purchase tickets for the 10th annual Brewgrass Festival. The festival showcases 46 American Breweries this year, plus a great gathering of musicians for a rollicking good time on downtown Asheville’s “The Block.” The event is hosted by the Great Smokies Craft Brewers Association and benefits the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Western North Carolina. This year’s event will be held on Market Street, directly behind Barley’s. According to the festival’s Web site, the “music lineup is one of the best we’ve had.” Bluegrass fans can look forward to the sounds of John Cowan, the Greasy Beans, the Gibson Brothers and more. Lest we forget about the beer, more than 100 brews will be available to sample. Many of our local and regional brewers will be present, as well as some fabulous out-of-towners like Rogue, Abita, Lost Coast and Tommyknocker. Brewgrass takes place on Saturday, Sept. 23, from noon to 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 after Sept. 16. Designated-driver tickets are only $12.
