Action Fest organizers take their gloves off introducing the ‘first-ever action film festival’
Action Fest 2010 got off to a rousing start, as captured in a video by Pommeemmop, in which the festival’s pumped-up organizer took a larger-than-life approach, mocking this week’s competing Hatchfest and promising “awesome” action films and live stunt shows by the best in the industry.

Book Report: Three new books
Just because the days are longer, brighter ad warmer doesn’t mean there isn’t time to read. Like, on your beach getaway, or on your back deck while sprawled across a lawn chair. To get you motivated to trade your sunglasses for reading glasses, here are three recent releases.
This weekend on a shoestring
There’s kind of a theme to this weekend’s Shoestring feature: Free art openings on Friday, free festivals on Saturday. Plus, lots of live music both days.
Roundhouse kicks and rocket packs
Since it was announced last month, Actionfest has hit Asheville with the impact of one of Chuck Norris' stunning roundhouse kicks. Except instead of bringing a world of pain, it's brought a world of anticipation to local fans of adrenaline-fueled cinema. Billed as the world's first film festival devoted exclusively to action, the four-day event […]
Hatch marks
HATCH festival carries a certain cachet, though even its organizers are hard-pressed to put a finger on just what exactly the festival is. Perhaps that's because, like any meaningful work of art, it reveals itself in layers. Perhaps that's because, while HATCH provides a booster shot of inspiration, its full impact is felt afterwards — […]
A wonderful world
Many Ashevilleans take pride in treating every day as though it's Earth Day. But on Saturday, those scattered individuals will come together as one in Martin Luther King Jr. Park to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with music, food, crafts and community. At the eco-village: Funk outfit The New Mastersounds is part of […]
Traveling Bonfires unpacks for Pritchard Park
Pasckie Pascua is a name that's hard to forget. But the man behind the memorable moniker is well-known, too. For nearly a decade, Pascua and his organization, the Traveling Bonfires, have worked to bring all segments of the local community together through music and poetry-centered events. The Bonfires for Peace concert series, now entering its […]

Edgy Mama: HATCH, family-friendly style
We’re not hatching chicks here, we’re hatching ideas, inspiration and connections. At least, I think that’s what HATCH Asheville’s all about.

Review of The Importance of Being Earnest
The more shows I see Montford’s intrepid players undertake, the more fond of them I become. It’s community theater at its best, as far as I’m concerned. The vibe with the audience is supportive and enthusiastic, and you can’t help but feel that everyone, both onstage and off, is having a tremendously good time.
Review of Dead Man’s Cell Phone
The play is good entertainment, full of comic quirks and flights of fancy, and yet it also feels intelligent and profound. If that profundity turns out to be less real than imagined, well, you can’t expect to have your lobster bisque and eat it too.
