Power, or “Amandla,” exists in “every fiber of the living experience,” according to Claude Coleman Jr. (formerly of Ween), who christened his band with the Zulu word. In live format, the psych-soul rocker takes on frontman and guitar duties alongside fellow Ashevilleans Jon Lauterer (drums), Rachel Waterhouse (keys, vocals) and Dave Gilbert (guitar, vocals). In the recording studio, Coleman morphs into a one-man band, playing all instruments, engineering and producing his own songs. In anticipation of Amandla’s upcoming album release, Coleman and company will perform Laughing Hearts in its entirety for the first time ever. Local bands The Toothe (psychedelic folk) and Press (guitar-driven rock) open the show at The Mothlight on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9:30 p.m. $10/12. themothlight.com. Photo courtesy of Coleman
Smart bets: Amandla

Correction: Amandla is not a “roots-reggae” band
Hey Jon — Genre labeling is always a delicate subject, but that roots reggae description came from Amandla’s facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/AmandlaBand). Thanks for checking out the article and commenting. How would you categorize Amandla’s music?
Hello Kat. I see your confusion. That’s the wrong “Amandla” page / band. This is the correct page:
https://www.facebook.com/amandlanet
Amandla is basically a rock band with elements of pop and psychedelic soul mixed in.
It would be nice if you could correct this on your web page so people aren’t confused.
Thanks – Jon
Oh dear! Update coming, thanks!
Jon, I’ve updated the genre per your description and also added a link to Claude’s correct facebook page. Thanks again for the heads up.
Much obliged, Kat. Cheers
