Smart bets: Balsam Range

Named after the majestic range of mountains where the Smokies meet the Blue Ridge, Balsam Range has been steadily making its mark on the bluegrass scene since the five musicians came together in 2007. The band’s 2012 album, Papertown, won the 2013 IBMA Album of the Year award, and expectations are high for the group’s latest release, Five. “How do we follow an Album of the Year?” asks Tim Surrett, vocalist and bass player for the band. “We finally just went in there and made the best record we could and had some fun.” The album release takes place at Isis Music Hall on Friday, June 13, at 9 p.m. $18/$22. isisasheville.com.
