Half of local hip-hop duo CrazyHorse & Colston (repeat winners in the annual Best of WNC readers poll), Bryan Godleski, aka Colston (that’s with a silent T), is set to release a solo mix tape. That project, Uppercuts, reflects Colston’s personal struggles with relationships, substances and going it alone musically, as well as his determination to fight through those hard times in order to complete his album. Uppercuts features local guest musicians like Don Lewis, Daniele Soul and Darrell Earwood, MCs Larry Williams, Chris Shreve and Hunter Bennett (among others) and 11-year-old vocalist Emma Hammond. And then there are Colston’s distinctly Western North Carolinian additions to the instrumentals of Sublime, Nicki Manaj, Lorde and more. The release show happens at The Grey Eagle on Thursday, July 16, at 9 p.m. Mentirosa also performs; Brooklyn-based rock collective Shinobi Ninja headlines. $10 advance/$12 day of show. thegreyeagle.com.
