Talk of immigration, religion and cross-cultural insensitivity usually has a silencing effect on groups of strangers. But comedian Krish Mohan approaches the subjects with just the right mix of emotional intelligence, realism and personal experience to evoke laughter and thought from his audiences. “I think comedians are the new philosophers,” he says. “If you can make people laugh about the absurdity in politics and social issues through humor and satire, you can [make] people more comfortable to talk about them.” As an Indian-American immigrant (or “hyphenated American”), Mohan’s stand-up shows draw heavily on his own reception into a country that asks of him: “Oh yeah? What tribe are you a part of?” Mohan makes his Asheville debut when the How Not to Fit in Tour stops at The Altamont Theatre on Thursday, April 21, at 8:30 p.m. thealtamont.com.
