Leaves rustle across the cracked sidewalk. The wind blows cold on a small group of people huddled in the shadows under the Battery Park Apartment building. A man wearing a Panama hat gestures at the windows. He tells the tale of a brutal murder that happened here in 1936, and the lingering aftereffects that may […]

Edgy Mama: Morning madness
So the morning rush begins. By the time everyone’s fed and dressed, lunches and backpacks packed, shoes and jackets located, and both kidlings bundled out the door at 7:15, I’m exhausted.
Edgy Mama: Talking more about less
Enviro-spouse and I concur that, given the current financial crisis and everyone’s need to cut back on expenses, we’ll start preparing the kids early for a sparse holiday season. Clearly, October is not too early to start.
Edgy Mama: Inheriting the future
We’re all, to some extent, motivated by fear, particularly fear of what we can’t control. As a parent, I realize that there’s a lot to be scared of, but I also recognize that, outside of encasing my kids in plastic bubbles, there’s only so much I can control.
Talking with Black Mountain College’s first African-American student

Edgy Mama: I need a new baby
You see, once my maternal instinct turned on — once my hormones conspired to convince me that my primary role in life is “mother” — I haven’t been able to rid my subconscious of that conviction.

Come on, America, do you want moose burgers or veggie burgers?
Askville: Blogging for a husband
A few weeks ago, Brevard resident Mari Ainsworth put out a plea on her new blog, the frankly titled Husband Wanted (see it at ahusbandwanted.blogspot.com). The blog’s subtitle: “It takes a village to raise a child … and a city to find a husband.” Mari Ainsworth “It’s true … I’m definitely in the market for […]
Painting with plants
Only a handful of people in the world have orchestrated a live plant installation on the scale of the Biltmore House’s new flower carpet, says Travis Murray, Biltmore’s garden crew leader. They’re big in Belgium: The Biltmore brings a flower tapestry this side of the Atlantic. Photos By Anne Fitten Glenn Biltmore’s gardening crew recently […]
