The Story: An investment banker tries to save her career, while her boyfriend is secretly (and illegally) trying to sabotage her. The Lowdown: A not-very-thrilling Wall Street thriller with hints of feminism that don't quite come together — and a weak cast that doesn't help things.
Starring: Oakes Fegley, Bryce Dallas Howard, Oona Laurence, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban

Pete’s Dragon


The Story: After a car crash kills his parents, a young boy is taken in by a dragon who lives in the wilderness. The Lowdown: A gentle, sweet, family-centric movie that has some small points of interest, but one that's not very exciting as a whole.
Starring: Izia Higelin, Cecile De France, Noemie Lvovsky, Kevin Azais, Benjamin Bellecour

Summertime


The Story: A romance between two women in 1970s Paris is transferred to the French countryside, where the stresses of loyalty and lifestyle take hold. The Lowdown: An intelligent, beautifully acted and scripted story of love and its difficulties.
Starring: WIll Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jared Leto

Suicide Squad


The Story: An expendable group of bad guys is gathered by the government as the world's final defense against catastrophe. The Lowdown: A mismatched, cobbled-together superhero movie crippled by a poor script, forced levity and, worst of all, nothing new to add to the superhero genre.
Starring: Steve Gleason, Michel Varisco-Gleason, Mike Gleason, Rivers Gleason

Gleason


The Story: A former NFL player is diagnosed with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease) just before discovering his wife is pregnant with their first child. The Lowdown: An emotionally open picture of a family dealing with a debilitating disease that will be of most interest to people curious about the fight against ALS.
Starring: Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Julia Stiles

Jason Bourne


The Story: Sullen superspy Jason Bourne comes out of hiding, hounded by government agents and on the hunt for more truths about his past. The Lowdown: A poorly shot, dramatically dull spy flick with zero energy or intelligence. An amazing drop-off from the previous films in the franchise.
Starring: Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Emily Meade, Miles Heizer, Machine Gun Kelly

Nerve


The Story: A nebbishy teen joins an app that challenges her to more and more elaborate (and dangerous) dares for cash. The Lowdown: A flaccid thriller full of toothless teenage drama, floppy high jinks and flimsy characters.
Starring: Ange Dargent, Theophile Baquet, Audrey Tautou, Diane Besnier

Microbe and Gasoline


The Story: Two friends decide to run away from home and explore France in a homemade mobile home. The Lowdown: A gentle and intelligent tale of the confusion of young adulthood told with Gondry's signature heart and whimsy.
Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Sofia Boutella, Idris Elba, Karl Urban

Star Trek Beyond


The Story: The crew of the starship Enterprise find themselves stranded on a distant planet controlled by a violent maniac. The Lowdown: A glossy and occasionally fun summer action flick that suffers from a general incoherency and disposability.
Starring: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, Maria Bello, Billy Burke

Lights Out


The Story: A creepy terror relegated to the shadows is stalking the family of a traumatized young woman. The Lowdown: A poorly scripted, dully acted horror film full of cheap scares and zero atmosphere.
Starring: Lou de Laage, Agata Buzek, Agata Kulesza, Vincent Macaigne, Joanna Kulig

The Innocents


The Story: In post-World War II Poland, a French Red Cross nurse looks after a convent whose nuns have been sexually assaulted by Soviet soldiers. The Lowdown: A heavy, serious meditation on faith, womanhood and abuse that's not easy to watch but is worthy, thanks to its intelligence.
Starring: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth

Ghostbusters


The Story: With ghosts invading Manhattan, three scientists and a transit system worker begin hunting them down. The Lowdown: A needlessly meandering and achingly jokey reworking of a supposed classic, one that leans too heavily on in-references and wastes a likable cast.
Starring: Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, Chris Colfer

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie


The Story: Two aging, drug-addled socialites go on the run after one of them accidentally murders Kate Moss. The Lowdown: A shrill and grating attempt at creating commentary on the rich and famous, but one with no teeth and little direction.
Starring: Yo-Yo Ma, Kayhan Kalhor, Wu Man, Cristina Pato

The Music of Strangers


The Story: An examination of life and art through cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble. The Lowdown: A good-hearted and well-meaning documentary that feels a little stiff and flimsy considering its subject matter.
Starring: Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Sugar Lyn Beard

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates


The Story: Two goofy brothers with a penchant for destruction-causing high jinks are forced into finding dates to their sister's wedding, only to be fooled into taking two hard-partying friends. The Lowdown: A loud, unoriginal comedy that's a forgettable hodgepodge of equally bad movies.
Starring: Ruby Barnhill, Mark Rylance, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall

The BFG


The Story: A young girl is whisked away to a magical land by a big, friendly giant. The Lowdown: A generally kindhearted and sweet-natured adventure film that could use a bit more whimsy and a shorter runtime.
Starring: Alexander Skarsgard, Christoph Waltz, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou

The Legend of Tarzan


The Story: Tarzan, supposed King of the Jungle turned aristocrat, returns to Africa only to find himself and his wife lured into a deadly trap. The Lowdown: A mature and stylish adventure film that suffers from being a bit too straight-faced and an inability to match its tone to its pulpy source.
Starring: Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Karl Glusman, Bella Heathcote, Keanu Reeves

The Neon Demon


The Story: A young model moves to Los Angeles and finds herself the center of attention, some of which is more dangerous than others. The Lowdown: A dull, pretentious and shallow examination of high fashion.

Independence Day: Resurgence


The Story: Two decades after thwarting an alien invasion, Earth finds itself in the midst of a surprise attack once again. The Lowdown: A rehash of its predecessor, with shades of interesting ideas, but becomes little more than a big-budget disasterfest with all the trappings and mindlessness this implies.
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Christopher Berry

Free State of Jones


The Story: During the Civil War, a poor Mississippi farmer leads a rebellion against the Confederate Army. The Lowdown: A film too aware of its own importance —  and it shows, with its endless speechifying, solemn tone and laborious pacing.
