Asheville Mountaineers win hockey tournament
May 21, 2016. The Asheville Hockey League’s travel team, Asheville Mountaineers, won first place in the 14U division at the Echo Travel Lite Inline Hockey Tournament Series Finals in Snellville, Ga. The tournament, which brought together teams from the Atlanta area, Gainesville and Jacksonville, Fla., Asheville, N.C., and Nashville, Tenn., took place April 23-24.

Books For Good hosts reading sale June 3-4
Books for Good, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization in Fletcher that sells items to benefit donor-specified charities, is holding its Summer Reading Sale on Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4. More than 50,000 adult and children’s books, CDs, and DVDs will be available at a 25 percent discount, except for gift cards. Sale hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

YMCA of North Carolina hosting Hula Invitational Swim Meet
The YMCA of Western North Carolina will host its 13th annual Hula Invitational swim meet Friday, May 27, through Sunday, May 29, 2016. Two hundred and fifty swimmers from throughout the Southeast—including ten YMCA teams—will compete at Asheville’s Recreation Park Pool, located at 69 Gashes Creek Road. Competitors will have the opportunity to meet qualification standards for state, regional, and national level competitions.

Frequent flying with the Wood Thrush
The local student chose the Wood Thrush as her project focus, and designed an event to raise funds and awareness about the threats to this beloved bird due to climate change. Proceeds raised from the silent auction and donations will go to the local Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society and the Cloud Forest School in Central America to help the Wood Thrush.
North Carolina’s April unemployment rate at 5.4 percent
The state’s seasonally adjusted April unemployment rate was 5.4 percent, decreasing 0.1 of a percentage point from March’s revised rate. The national rate remained unchanged at 5.0 percent.
