From an A-B Tech press release:

A-B Tech sponsors Women’s History Month presentation: “Victorian Girl Power: The Roles of Women in Asheville in the Late 19th Century”

A-B Tech is sponsoring a Women’s History Month presentation titled, “Victorian Girl Power: The Roles of Women in Asheville in the Late 19th Century,” at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 11, in Rhododendron 344 by Marie Bartlett, local author and former A-B Tech instructor.

Bartlett, author of Pearl, MD will discuss the rigid roles of women in the latter part of the 19th century, including common and uncommon professions, social expectations, racial and gender bias, daily life and sensitive female topics ranging from sexuality to domestic issues. Medical maladies and the cures that influenced Pearl, MD will also be discussed.

Participants will learn about the history of our community, the roots of many of our faculty, staff and students. What was it like to be a female physician in the frontier town of Asheville in the 1880s? What was life like for the local African-American community at that time?  A book signing will follow the program. The program is hosted by the Social Sciences Department and the Office of Student Life and Development. The event is free and open to the public.
