ASHEVILLE – Complaints from business owners, visitors and residents caused city staff to examine policies involving panhandling, peddling and busking, city officials said Friday.
City staff will present information on those issues to the city’s Public Safety Committee at 3:30 p.m. Monday on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, said city spokeswoman Dawa Hitch.
The presentation revolves around management of public space in the Central Business District. It will include discussion of policy options for busking, panhandling and peddling for City Council to consider, Hitch said. The topic of potential street performing regulation has created a lot of discussion this week on social media.
City Councilman Jan Davis said buskers add to the city’s vibrancy and he’s supportive of their presence, but clarity is needed on what’s “good and bad behavior.”
