The City of Asheville operates under a council-manager form of government. The Asheville City Council establishes the City’s policies and appoints the City Manager, who oversees day-to-day city operations and executes Council-established laws and policies. The City Council also ensures the entire community is being served.
The City Council is made up of a mayor and six council members who are elected at-large.
As previously announced, Council member Vijay Kapoor will resign from City Council in August, as he is moving with his family out of state. The advertised seat is for an unexpired term to be filled by appointment of the City Council. The appointed individual will serve the remainder of the vacant term, ending in December 2022.
Eligible applicants must be City of Asheville residents and be registered to vote in the City of Asheville. Applicants must submit an application, resume and complete six essay questions (½ page maximum for each response).
Residents interested in applying for the vacant seat should contact the City Clerk at mburleson@ashevillenc.gov or by calling 828-259-5601 to receive an application form and additional information.
The City will begin accepting applications on Aug. 3. The deadline for applications and supplemental information is noon Aug. 20.
