The Asheville Art Museum is excited to present Hear Our Voice, on view May 20 – July 16, 2017 at the Asheville Art Museum On the Slope at 175 Biltmore Ave. The exhibition explores the potential of visual art to empower people, artists and communities and promote dialogue.
Significant events in history inspire creative activity, and artists play an important role in visually defining these key moments. The works in this exhibition exemplify how artists communicate and share messages that are important to them and in turn provide the public with tools for communication. The majority of the artists featured in this exhibition are women, and many of the images focus discussion on ideas like equality, the strength of women, and the power of organized collaboration.
Hear Our Voice is organized by the Amplifier Foundation, which accepts submissions for artwork in response to current organized actions and issues. The works on view in the exhibition were submitted by artists and presented as free, downloadable posters for The Women’s March that took place in many cities across the country on January 21, 2017. The Amplifier Foundation saw the impressive artistic talent in the submissions and made them available for an exhibition. Of the 5,000 submissions The Amplifier Foundation received, the Asheville Art Museum has selected over 50 of them for its Hear Our Voice exhibition. The exhibition includes series of works by internationally-recognized artists Shepard Fairey and Jessica Sabogal.
