Press release from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce:
In celebration of Manufacturing Day, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Coalition of Asheville-Buncombe will host a virtual field trip for high school students across the Asheville MSA Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 10:00-11:00 a.m.Manufacturing Day, a national initiative of The Manufacturing Institute, helps show the exciting opportunity of modern manufacturing careers by encouraging companies and educational institutions to open their virtual doors to students, parents, teachers and community leaders. As manufacturers seek to fill 4.6 million high-skill, high-tech and high-paying jobs over the next decade, Manufacturing Day empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive. In the Asheville MSA, manufacturing jobs continue to be in high-demand and offer higher wages than average with opportunity for advancement. Even in the current pandemic, 12% of the workforce work in manufacturing in the Asheville MSA.
“With manufacturing careers at the heart of some of the most impactful work being done in response to the pandemic, we are excited to shine a spotlight on manufacturing careers,” said April Brown, the Asheville Chamber’s director of Existing Industry & Workforce Development.
This virtual field trip will feature interactive virtual tours of local manufacturing companies, Industry Nine and French Broad Chocolates, designed specifically with high school students in mind. There will be opportunities for student engagement during the virtual field trip and resources available to teachers after the event so they can continue the conversation in their classrooms. As a sneak peek to the virtual tours, check out these brief interviews with Jael Rattigan of French Broad Chocolates and Clint Spiegel of Industry Nine.
The Asheville Chamber’s Manufacturing Day program is supported by HomeTrust Bank, Insurance Service of Asheville, Inc (ISA), Kudzu Brands, IMOCO, Inc., Pardee UNC Health Care.
