Local small business collective Asheville Grown, the organization behind the Love Asheville and Go Local campaigns, with be celebrating Appalachian New Economy Week between Monday, November 9 and Friday, November 13 with a series of events, discussions and a film screening of This Changes Everything on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at Lenoir-Rhyne University in downtown Asheville.
According to Franzi Charen, founder of Asheville Grown, this year’s Appalachian New Economy Week will focus on building a healthier, locally-based economy throughout the mountains. The week’s events and celebrations in Asheville will begin with the screening of This Changes Everything, a film based off of author Naomi Klein‘s eponymous book, which looks at grassroots movements in hundreds of communities to address climate change and changing economic realities.
A group discussion will follow the film screening, with refreshments provided by French Broad Brewing Company and Scott’s Knotts Pretzels. Admission to the film screening is free to the public.
In addition to the screening, a variety of meetings and events will take place across the week at local breweries and pubs to share information about local businesses and organizations and raise awareness about economic alternatives.
“The ‘new economy’ generally refers to businesses and economic strategies that create more diverse local economies that build broad prosperity while restoring the environment,” says Charen of the idea behind ANEW. Asheville’s efforts are being coordinated along with similar events in Abingdon, Virginia and Whitesburg, Kentucky under ANEW’s regional coordinators.

Efforts to build a healthier, more locally-based economy are being highlighted during Appalachian New Economy Week being held from November 9 – 13th. The Asheville Grown Business Alliance is taking part in this national and regional effort to bring attention to the “New Economy”. We will be joining the Appalachian New Economy Week (ANEW) which combines the efforts of entrepreneurs and activists in Abingdon, Virginia, Whitesburg, Kentucky and Asheville, North Carolina. The “new economy” generally refers to businesses and economic strategies that create more diverse local economies that build broad prosperity while restoring the environment.
All three communities are hosting events, including a screening of the new documentary, “This Changes Everything” based on Naomi Klein’s new book which looks at grassroots responses to climate change across hundreds of communities. Other activities include gatherings at local breweries and pubs, sharing of information about local businesses and new economy organizations, and campaigns to raise awareness about emerging economic alternatives.
In Asheville we will be screening “This Changes Everything” on Tuesday evening, November 10th at Lenoir Rhyne University, 36 Montford Ave. 2nd floor boardroom (above the Asheville Visitor’s Center). The film showing starts at 6pm with refreshments provided by French Broad Brewing and Scott’s Knots Pretzels and a discussion to follow. Admission is free!
About the film: The extraordinary detail and richness of the cinematography in This Changes Everything provides an epic canvas for this exploration of the greatest challenge of our time. Unlike many works about the climate crisis, this is not a film that tries to scare the audience into action: it aims to empower. Provocative, compelling, and accessible to even the most climate-fatigued viewers,This Changes Everything will leave you refreshed and inspired, reflecting on the ties between us, the kind of lives we really want, and why the climate crisis is at the centre of it all.
