Temporary uses and community programs will continue this spring and summer at 68 Haywood Street, a public gathering space across from the U.S. Cellular Center. This is an opportunity for craft fairs, food trucks and other special event organizers to set up in the heart of downtown.
The future development site was made available for public use and community-driven temporary programs in August of 2017 based on the recommendations of the Haywood Street Advisory Team. Since opening, 68 Haywood has supported various events and programs, including outdoor performances, vendor markets, food trucks and a temporary mural project. Nearby, the community garden at 33 Page Avenue also continues to blossom as a temporary use of City-owned property through the Office of Sustainability’s Community Garden program.
In 2018, a Mobile Food Vending program was piloted for the site, giving area food trucks an easy and affordable way to vend on a flexible basis. That opportunity will continue this year, beginning on May 1. Permit applications open today, April 18. Vendors can apply for the $50 permit at this link. Once a permit is secured, vendors may use the site at no additional cost on a first-come, first-served basis during open hours (7 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
Beginning May 1
- Shade sails, seating and umbrellas (being stored for winter) will be back on the site.
- The site will remain open until 9 p.m.
- Mobile Food Vending program will continue.
- Spring plantings will be in place.
Help us spread the word to area food trucks and those interested in organizing events! Permits for outdoor special events can be secured through the City’s Office of Outdoor Special Events.
In addition to special events, 68 Haywood Street remains open and available for recreational uses by the public when not reserved.
What’s next?
Beginning in January 2020, 68 Haywood Street will be temporarily dedicated to support project construction and communications for the upcoming Haywood Streetscape project. This will likely include using the site for construction staging material, an on-site superintendent’s office, and a place for the public to get information about the project.
The City is currently working on identifying funding for the development of a final Design and Implementation Plan for this and the surrounding City-owned properties and streets. More information is available here.
